Blackhawks Win Connor Bedard Lottery

The Chicago Blackhawks had an 8.1% of winning the 2007 NHL Draft Lottery and still won it. They selected Patrick Kane with the first pick. Three years later they won the Stanley Cup championship.

This morning, Chicago Blackhawks fans hope history will repeat itself.

The Blackhawks owned an 11.5% chance of winning the NHL Draft Lottery last night. And they won it again and earned the right to select Connor Bedard with the first pick in next month’s draft.

Bedard is expected to be even more spectacular than Kane has been. He is considered a generational talent. Bedard netted 71 goals and registered 143 points in 57 games for the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League this season. He had 10 more goals in seven playoff games.

"When our logo flipped over, I was just, 'Wow,'" Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson said. "You understand the impact that a first overall pick can have and having the first overall pick in the right year. Hopefully, that's what we've got here and it can change a franchise, it can change a city and it can change an era in a team's history."

Davidson didn’t say he will select Connor Bedard, but there’s no doubt he will. Scouts see Bedard having as much impact as Sidney Crosby or Connor McDavid.

The Anaheim Ducks, who had the NHL’s worst record, will pick second in the draft, followed by the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Ducks had a 25.5% chance of picking first and the Blue Jackets were at 13.5%. The Blue Jackets had the second-worst record.

The Ducks and Blue Jackets will receive desirable consolation prizes. This is a deep draft pool and University of Michigan player Adam Fantilli and Swedish standout Leo Carlsson could have been No. 1 picks in other draft years.

In 2007, the Blackhawks already had Jonathan Toews. He had been drafted No. 3 overall the year before. Bedard will be joining a team that had three first-round picks last year: defenseman Kevin Korchinski (No. 7), center Frank Nazar (No. 13) and defenseman Sam Rinzel (No.25). Before last year’s draft, the Blackhawks entered a rebuild mode.

They also traded Kane before the trade deadline and Jonathan Toews will retire or leave through free agency.

CAN’T MISS

⭐️ Jack Eichel’s three points power Vegas to 5-1 win over Edmonton for series lead. The Oilers held a brief lead in game 3 thanks to Warren Foegele’s 1st goal of the playoffs just 2:45 into regulation but Jonathan Marchessault erased the lead two minutes later with his 1st of the postseason before scoring his 2nd, and the eventual game-winner, with less than a minute left in the 1st period — both goals assisted by Eichel. The 2nd period was all Vegas as Zach Whitecloud, Jack Eichel, and Chandler Stephenson scored to give the Golden Knights a 5-1 lead headed into the 3rd. Adin Hill stopped all 24 shots faced in relief of Laurent Brossoit, who left the game at 11:44 with a lower body injury. Leon Draisaitl’s 5-game goal streak and 8-game point streak came to an end in the 5-1 loss.

🏆 NHL announced Hakstol, Montgomery, and Ruff as Jack Adams trophy finalists. The trophy is awarded annually to the coach in the NHL who has "contributed the most to his team's success" as voted on by the National Association of Broadcasters. Dave Hakstol, a 1st-time finalist, led the Kraken to playoff berth in their 2nd NHL season after improving by 19 wins and 40 pts (from 60 to 100) from their inaugural season. Jim Montgomery, also a 1st-time finalist, led the Bruins to the most wins (65) and points (135) in a single season in NHL history. Lindy Ruff, a 4-time finalist, led the Devils to their most wins and points (112) in a season, a 25-win and 49-point improvement over last season, and a 3rd-place finish in the NHL standings.
