Oh Brother, Hughes Boys Post Six Points in 8-4 Win

The New Jersey Devils needed a fresh offensive spark and went with a name they knew they could trust.

Defenseman Luke Hughes made his NHL playoff debut and he and brother, Jack, combined for six points to lead the Devils to a critical 8-4 win against the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 3 of their second round series.

The Devils still trail the Hurricanes 2-1 in their best-of-seven series.

Jack Hughes posted two goals and two assists, while younger brother Luke, 19, managed two assists.

They are the sixth set of brothers to combine for six-plus points in a postseason contest for the same team. The others: Henri and Maurice Richard (9 in 1956), Don and Nick Metz (8 in 1942), Daniel and Henrik Sedin (7 in 2011), Duane and Brent Sutter (7 in 1983 and 6 in another game in 1983) and Anton and Peter Stastny (6 in 1981).

Jack Hughes (21 years, 358 days) became the youngest player in Devils’ history to register four points in a playoff game.

Luke Hughes played college hockey at Michigan this season, and then signed with the Devils after the Wolverines’ season. He played two regular-season games.

“I thought Luke had a great night from the first shift to the end of the game," New Jersey coach Lindy Ruff said. "You expect maybe you'll get a good game, I thought he gave us a great game."

The Devils had some difficulty scoring in the playoffs before Sunday’s outburst. New Jersey had lost the first two games of the series by a cumulative score of 11-2.

Even after scoring eight goals in Game 3, the Devils are only averaging 2.7 goals per game in this postseason.

Timo Meier, acquired from the Sharks to bolster the offense, also scored his first goal of the playoffs.

CAN’T MISS

🍾 Sam Reinhart scores 3:02 into overtime to give Panthers 3-0 series lead. The 27-year-old forward scored his 1st goal of the series, 5th of the playoffs, in timely fashion, finding Joseph Woll’s five-hole off a quick wrap around. Earlier in the game, Anthony Duclair tied things up at 1-1 off a pretty breakaway move and Carter Verhaeghe later tied it at 2-2 thanks to a Radko Gudas shot deflecting off his pants and into the back of the net midway through the 2nd. Leafs netminder Ilya Samsonov was crashed into by teammate Luke Schenn 37 seconds into the 2nd period and didn’t return; Joseph Woll made 18 saves in his relief. Sergei Bobrovsky made 22 saves in his 6th consecutive win.

🔥 Seattle Kraken erupt for five goals in 2nd period to take 2-1 series lead over the Stars. After a tight scoreless 1st period, just over two minutes into the 2nd Tye Kartye’s shot from the high slot hit Miro Heiskanen in the face to the right of the net where Jordan Eberle immediately corralled the “rebound” and scored a crafty goal in tight to open the floodgates; Heiskanen didn’t return to the game. Alex Wennberg, Carson Soucy, Matty Beniers, and Eeli Tolvanen added goals in the 2nd while Yanni Gourde scored a shorthanded goal and Justin Schultz a power play goal in the 3rd period as the Kraken shellacked the Stars 7-2.
