Islanders Can’t Find Goals or Wins This Month

The New York Islanders fired Barry Trotz last May and promoted Lane Lambert to head coach with the hope of reinvigorating the team.
Eight months later, the Islanders are in a free fall in the standings and in danger of missing the NHL playoffs for a second consecutive season.
The Islanders’ losing streak hit six games Wednesday night when they fell 2-1 to the Ottawa Senators. The Islanders are 1-7-3 in their past 11 and have only scored more than two goals once in those 11 contests.
Lack of scoring is the heart of the problem. The Islanders have scored 18 goals over the past 11 games. They are 1-for-27 (3.7%) on the power play in that span, while giving up two shorthanded goals.
Brock Nelson leads the team with 18 goals, but he recently went 14 games without a goal.
But it’s not completely an offensive problem. In those 11 games, the Islanders have also given up four or more goals six times.
“There’s no excuses. Because it’s on me, totally on me,” Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello told Amalie Benjamin earlier this week.
The Islanders have been linked to several trade rumors, particularly involving the Vancouver Canucks. Reports suggest Lamoriello has interest in Brock Boeser and Bo Horvat.
Lamoriello has historically been an aggressive general manager. He’s expected to make a move before the March 3 NHL trade deadline.
Despite New York’s recent collapse, the Islanders are still only five points behind the Washington Capitals for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
“Have I lost trust and belief in this team? Absolutely not,” Lamoriello said.
CAN'T MISS
🦑 The Seattle Kraken set a new franchise record with their 28th win last night. The Kraken defeated the Vancouver Canucks for the first time in franchise history while setting a new watermark for the franchise. Oliver Bjorkstrand contributed two goals and Eeli Tolvanen scored his 6th goal (watch here) in 13 games since being picked up off waivers en route to a 6-1 shellacking of the Canucks — Rick Tocchet's first loss as bench boss of the Canucks.
🙅♂️ The Columbus Blue Jackets rally to snap the Oilers' six-game winning streak. Joonas Korpisalo made 34 saves while Boone Jenner and Kirill Marchenko each scored goals in regulation, setting the stage for rookie Kent Johnson's overtime winner (watch here) as the Blue Jackets defeated the Oilers 3-2. Having won two of their last three games, the Blue Jackets are now tied with the Anaheim Ducks for the 2nd-worst point total in the NHL, 1 point more than the last-place Chicago Blackhawks.
