Jeremy Swayman’s Back-To-Back Shutouts Has Bruins Back On Track
Swayman made 26 saves to beat the Buffalo Sabres 7-0 Sunday to become the first Boston netminder to post two consecutive shutouts since Tuukka Rask did it in 2011-12. On Thursday, Swayman needed 36 stops in a 3-0 triumph against the Winnipeg Jets.
He now owns a streak of 1:44.52 minutes of shutout hockey. His four shutouts this season leave him only one behind NHL leaders Ilya Sorokin (New York Islanders) and Darcy Kuemper (Washington Capitals).
Thanks to Swayman’s efforts, the Bruins have three consecutive wins and are again playing the strong all-around game that has allowed them to be NHL’s No. 1 team for the entire season.
Prior to the three wins, the Bruins had lost three out of four games. Two of those losses came against non-playoff teams (Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks). The Bruins gave up 11 goals in those two contests and decided they needed to refocus on playing a style that will be successful in the postseason.
The Bruins did that against a Sabres team that ranks third overall in scoring this season. The Bruins tightened up their defensive coverage against Buffalo on Sunday.
“A little more concerted effort being five people connected," Boston coach Jim Montgomery said. "When we're playing connected like that, we all know where each other are in our spots. It's fun to watch them go."
Patrice Bergeron scored 15 seconds into the game to send a message that it was going to be a long afternoon for the Sabres. Bergeron finished with a goal and two assists for his 242nd career multi-point game.
The Bruins are now 26-9-4 on the road. That ties the franchise record for most road wins, set in 1971-72. Boston has 13 games remaining to catch or surpass the 2018-19 Lightning (62-16-4) and 1995-96 Red Wings (62-13-7) for the NHL record for most wins in a season.
CAN'T MISS
🔥 K'Andre Miller collects four points, Rangers win 4th straight in 7-0 shellacking of the Predators. The 23-year-old Minnesota-native made history, becoming the first defenseman in Rangers history to score four points (2 goals, 2 assists) in a single period as the Rangers went up 6-0 in the first period. Artemi Panarin scored a goal and added 2 assists, eleven Rangers in total registered a point, and Jaroslav Halak made 22 saves for his first shutout since March 11, 2021 — coincidentally against the Rangers as a member of the Boston Bruins. The Rangers are 7-2-1 in their last ten games and hold a commanding 12 point lead over the 1st Eastern Conference wild card spot.
🎩 Jesper Bratt records 1st NHL hat trick as Devils rally past the Lightning 5-2. The shifty 5'10" Swedish forward helped the Devils erase a 2-0 deficit, scoring just nine seconds after Alex Killorn to cut the Lightning's lead in half. Less than three minutes later Bratt scored from a distance through a sea of bodies to tie the game before scoring his 30th goal of the season — a career high — into an empty net to secure the hat trick. Nico Hischier also scored his 30th of the season for the first time in his career while adding an assist, and Dougie Hamilton collected two helpers as the Devils moved one point back from the Carolina Hurricanes for first place in the Metropolitan Division.
