NHL Teams Continue to Shop "Early" in Trade Market

Will there be any players left to trade on Friday’s NHL trade deadline day?

The league had another big day of buying and selling Wednesday, led by the Arizona Coyotes moving Jakob Chychrun to the Ottawa Senators for a 2023 first-round pick, plus 2024 and 2025 second-round picks. This deal further fortifies an Ottawa defense that already boasts highly skilled Thomas Chabot and Jake Sanderson.

Here are other highlights from the day:

  • The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired Mikael Granlund from the Nashville Predators for a 2023 second-round pick. This is the start of GM Ron Hextall's rebuilding of Pittsburgh’s third line. Hextall was undoubtedly feeling pressure to make a move. Earlier, the Penguins moved Teddy Blueger to the Vegas Golden Knights for defenseman Peter DiLiberatore and a 2024 third-round draft pick.

  • The Vancouver Canucks acquired defenseman Filip Hronek from the Detroit Red Wings for a 2023 first-round pick and a 2023 second rounder. The first round pick was acquired from the New York Islanders in the Bo Horvat trade. The Red Wings now have five picks in the first two rounds of the 2023 draft and nine picks total.

  • The Washington Capitals traded center Lars Eller to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for a 2025 second-round pick. The Caps are retaining 31% ($1.085 million) of Eller’s $3.5 million. The Caps are clearly sellers for this deadline. But they beat the Anaheim Ducks last night and are only three points out of a playoff spot.

  • The Carolina Hurricanes acquired defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere for a 2026 third-round pick. The skilled puck mover adds depth to this Stanley Cup contender. The ‘Canes haven’t made the big splash other Eastern Conference contenders have made.

CAN'T MISS

🔥 Dawson Mercer sets a new Devils' record, scoring in 7th straight game as the Devils down the Avs 7-5. The 21-year-old second year pro scored the game-winner late in the 2nd period (watch here) and added 3 assists as the Devils captured their 40th win while ending the Avs' win streak at six. Tomas Tatar scored while adding two assists and Akira Schmid made 12 saves on 12 shots in relief of Vitek Vanecek. Mercer, of Carbonear, Newfoundland, has scored 9 goals (watch👇) and added 5 assists for 14 points in his last 7 games.

💰 Dylan Larkin signs 8-year, $69.6 million contract extension with the Red Wings. Ending months of speculation that the Red Wings' captain would be traded or lost in free agency this summer, the 26-year-old center signs an 8-year extension with the Red Wings with an average annual value of $8.7 million. The Michigan-native leads the Red Wings in goals (22), assists (35), points (57), shots (185), and game winning goals (4) this season. With his captain and leading scorer locked up, Red Wings' GM Steve Yzerman can focus on re-establishing the Red Wings as a perennial contender.
