Ovechkin ties Howe with goal #786 with one team
It was only a matter of time but could it have been more fitting for Alex Ovechkin to tie Gordie Howe's long-standing record in none other than Detroit??
"It's pretty cool to do it here, although I would have rather been able to break it here. It's a great accomplishment."
No surprise the living legend would've preferred to break the record last night too — especially considering his Capitals lost 3-1 with an empty netter — but it's special nonetheless to tie the record in Motown and in front of Mark Howe, Gordie's son.
Prior to the game, Alex met with Mark Howe who offered some words of encouragement...
"On behalf of myself, Gordie and the Howe family, we wish you the best. Good luck. Keep going. Don't stop."
Ovechkin tied the record just over 8 minutes unto the second period, taking a Kuznetsov pass from his skate to stick before slinging a wrister past the glove of Ville Husso to tie the long-standing record.
And just in case you're wondering, Steve Yzerman (692) and Mario Lemieux (690) rank 3rd and 4th all-time in goals scored for one NHL franchise. The more you know.

CAN'T MISS
😮 The Devils stun the Oilers and set a franchise record scoring two goals in 7 seconds. Trailing 3-2 late in the third period, Devils defenseman Ryan Graves made a nice move before squeaking one through Stuart Skinner. Then right off the center ice draw Jesper Bratt was sprung on a breakaway to put the Devils up 4-3 with only 3:08 remaining in regulation.
🫢 Claude Giroux scored on a dump-in from center ice last night against Logan Thompson of the Golden Knights. In Thompson's defense, Giroux's dump-in took an unusual skip off the ice to the upper left corner — Thompson's glove side. Hop, skip, or a jump, Logan Thompson definitely wants that one back... but thank the hockey gods the Golden Knight still won.
