Pavelski, Giroux Reach 1,000 NHL Points on Same Night

When it comes to basic hockey skill, Dallas Stars forward Joe Pavelski is an average Joe.

“Not the greatest tools,” Detroit Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. “A skater who doesn’t have a ton of pop in his skating.”

But when it comes to hand-eye coordination, or knowing where he needs to be, or anticipating what is about to happen, Pavelski is one of the best in the game.

On Monday, Pavelski redirected defenseman Miro Heiskanen’s wrist shot from the point for his 27th goal of the season and 1,000th point of his highly respected career. It helped the Stars down the Red Wings 6-1 Monday to move into a first-place tie with the Colorado Avalanche in the Central Division.

“A high tip that baseball bounces into the net,” Lalonde said. “He just has an uncanny ability. One of the best probably of all-time. I think that’s fitting that his 1000th point happened like that.”

Pavelski was mobbed by teammates on the ice after the puck went in. Pavelski is the 10th American player and the fifth player drafted in the seventh round, or later to reach that milestone. Other late draftees in that club include Doug Gilmour (1,414), Luc Robitaille (1,394), Theo Fleury (1,088) and Dave Taylor (1,069).

Claude Giroux also registered his 1,000th point in the Ottawa Senators’ 3-2 win against the Carolina Hurricanes. This marked the first time in NHL history two players hit 1,000 points on the same night.

Giroux needed two points for a 1,000 and managed to score twice and added an assist in the Senators’ win.

“Yeah, just trying to keep my emotions intact,” Giroux said. “I knew it was going to happen that (my teammates) were going to come all on the ice. But when it actually happened it was definitely a little different, but it was special.”

Giroux also tied a career-high with his 34th goal in the game.

If Claude Giroux retired after this season, is he a Hall of Famer?

🟡🔵 Juuse Saros makes 42 saves to lead Preds to 3-2 shootout win over the Flames and extinguish Calgary’s playoffs hopes. The 27-year-old netminder made 42 saves in regulation plus 3 more in the shootout to keep Nashville’s playoff hopes alive. Egor Afanasyev scored his first National League goal and Zach Sanford buried his second of the season in regulation before Cody Glass and Tommy Novak sealed the win with shootout goals as the Preds collected their third win in their past past four games. The Predators remain 3 points back from the final Western Conference wild card spot, held by the Jets, with two games remaining on their schedule.

💯 Erik Karlsson scores twice, becomes just the 6th defenseman in NHL history to record 100 points in a season. The Norris-favorite Swedish blueliner scored 20 seconds into last night’s game before scoring a power play goal just under four minutes into the third to record his 25th goal and 100th point on the season in the Sharks 6-2 loss to the Jets. Karlsson is the first defenseman since Brian Leetch in the 1991-92 season to hit the century mark. In addition to Karlsson and Leetch, only Bobby Orr, Paul Coffey, Denis Potvin, and Al MacInnis have recorded 100-point seasons in NHL history.
