Pavelski Scores Again To Help Stars Tie Series

The Dallas Stars didn’t seem to know what to say about their ineffective Game 1 performance other than to point out it was uncharacteristic.

They are the NHL’s No. 3 defensive team. They don’t fall behind 4-1 in the first period.

The Stars were more like themselves in Game 2, riding a strong, confident 25-save bounce-back performance from goalie Jake Oettinger to a 4-2 series-tying win against the Seattle Kraken.

"I think the great teams, the ones that have won it all, their records are always crazy after losses," Oettinger said. "They brush themselves off. They take the good and learn from the bad, and they forget it pretty quickly. These series are long, every game is huge. That's what it's all about is the response, and we've been great at that."

The best-of-seven series now shifts to Seattle for two games, starting with Game 3 on Sunday.

Joe Pavelski scored for Dallas, giving him five goals in the past two games. Tyler Seguin and Wyatt Johnston each contributed a goal and an assist.

Pavelski is the eighth player in NHL history to net five goals over two consecutive playoff games, and only the second to do it the first two games of a series. Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon is the other (2021).

The only other player in Minnesota North Stars/Dallas Stars history to score five over two playoff games is Steve Payne. That was 42 years ago.

Unlike in Game 1, the Stars didn’t allow the Kraken to have many quality scoring chances. Their defensive coverage was tighter.

"They pressed hard. I think they played a lot more together than we did, and that's where we saw ourselves get exposed," Kraken defenseman Vince Dunn said. "We'll just have to look at that and learn from it.”

🐆 The Florida Panthers rally to win game two 3-2, sweep Toronto at home. The Panthers found themselves down 2-0 early in the 1st period thanks to goals from Leafs’ Alexander Kerfoot just 2:20 into the game and Ryan O’Reilly three minutes later but Florida quickly took control thereafter. Anton Lundell scored midway through the 1st to cut the Leafs’ lead in half before Aleksander Barkov scored 19 seconds into the 2nd followed by a Gustav Forsling tuck 47 seconds later. After a rough start to the game, Sergei Bobrovsky continued his dominate play collecting 35 saves, including 12 in the 3rd period, and a .946 save percentage. The Florida Panthers have now won five straight since being down 3-1 to the Bruins.

"You need your goaltender to win you a series every night, and he did that tonight," Florida coach Paul Maurice said. "I don't think it was easy at the start for him. Certainly the way we played in front of him the first 10 minutes was challenging, and then he built. You get behind the bench some nights and you get a feel for your goaltender where you go, 'Man he's just not getting beat again,' and that's what he gave our team."
