Good morning and happy Friday, March 10th.

Thank you to our readers who participated in yesterday's MacKinnon vs. Matthews poll. We were surprised to see exactly two out of every three voters prefer MacKinnon. We particularly appreciated Trent G.'s feedback on why he'd take MacKinnon:

“He's a proven winner and he's consistently voted as a nice guy in hockey. Building a team is more than just on-ice talent.”

Touché, Trent! While we can't comment on how nice of a guy Matthews is, he and the Leafs should be well positioned to make a deep run this postseason, assuming they get past the first round of course. 🤣

Stars First NHL Team To Score 10 Goals in a Game This Season

The Dallas Stars are in first place in the Central Division on the strength of a No. 5-ranked defense and Jake Oettinger’s stingy goaltending.

But the Stars are also a team with the ability to put on an offensive fireworks display.

The Stars showed that Thursday when nine different players scored in a 10-4 win against the Buffalo Sabres. It was the first time since Oct. 17, 1985 that the franchise reached that level of production in a road game.

The Sabres have missed the playoffs for 11 consecutive seasons, but haven’t given up 10 in a game since 2005. Eric Comrie is the first goalie in Sabres history to surrender 10 goals in a home game. The fact he made 39 saves speaks to how the Stars’ offense was clicking.

“We absolutely hung him out to dry, and that can’t happen,” Sabres captain Kyle Okposo said. “That’s something you learn when you’re 8 years old. You don’t hang your goalie out to dry and we did that tonight.”

Dallas is the fifth different team over the past five NHL seasons to score 10 goals in a game. The others: Canadiens (10 vs. FLA on April 29, 2022 & 10 vs. DET on Dec. 2, 2017), Penguins (11 vs. DET on March 27, 2022), Maple Leafs (10 vs. DET on Feb. 26, 2022) and the Blackhawks (10 vs. PIT on Oct. 5, 2017).

Radek Faksa was the only Dallas player to score twice in this game and Jason Robertson added three assists. The triumph allowed the Stars to move two points ahead of the idle Minnesota Wild for first place in the Central.

The only negative of the game for the Stars was seeing teammate Tyler Seguin suffering a leg cut that required stitches. Coach Pete DeBoer said after the game that it was possible that it would take him out of the lineup for some games.

CAN'T MISS

🥊 Vegas and Tampa collect 146 PIMs as Golden Knights recover for OT win. The game started fairly tame as each team traded goals with only one penalty called in the 1st. Temperatures starting rising late in the 2nd with Tanner Jeannot and Brayden McNabb dropping the mitts, Shea Theodore's double-minor high-stick on Maroon, and Steven Stamkos cross-checking Pietrangelo at the 20 minute mark. But all hell broke loose 12:16 into the 3rd thanks to a line brawl that resulted in 10 players collecting game misconducts. Ultimately the Golden Knights proved victorious thanks to Alec Martinez's OT winner.

“You haven’t seen that picture of gloves and sticks on the ice like that in a long time,” Cooper said. “It’s a different era of hockey. This was back to the 1980s. But even though we came out of it short, I thought the melee gave us a boost out of it.”

🛢 Darnell Nurse scores late as Edmonton Oilers end Bruins' 10-game winning streak. Despite keeping Connor McDavid off the scoresheet, limiting Leon Draisaitl to one assist, and going up 2-0 in the 1st period, the Bruins didn't do enough to extend their streak. The Oilers' Evan Bouchard scored in the 2nd to halve the B's lead before Ryan McLeod tied the game just over six minutes into the 3rd. Darnell Nurse sealed the Oilers' victory with a wrist shot through a screen with less than five minutes remaining in regulation. Stuart Skinner collected 26 saves and a .929 save percentage as the Oilers improve to 6-3-1 in their last ten.

"We've got confidence in our group," Nurse said. "I think we said it this morning that we can play with anyone in this league, but it's one thing to say it. It's [another] to go out there and do it, and we did tonight. I think, obviously, we had some huge saves, some big commitments to defense -- only giving up two (goals) -- and capitalizing on our opportunities."
