NHL GM’s Have No Appetite For Expanding Video Review At This Time
Johnny Gaudreau's 5 points power Columbus win, Jonathan Quick continues perfect start with Vegas, and more.
Good morning and happy hump day, Wednesday, March 15th.
Erik Karlsson collected 53.85% of the votes in yesterday's Norris Trophy poll with Adam Fox coming in a distant 2nd earning 15.38%. And Charlie McAvoy & Seth Jones earned a write-in vote each... but at -22 on the season, we really don't believe Seth Jones has a chance. 😂
NHL GM’s Have No Appetite For Expanding Video Review At This Time
NHL general managers decided at their annual meeting that they are not in any hurry to expand use of video review in officiating games.
The 32 GMs, meeting in Manalapan, Fla., explored expanding the coach’s challenge, or reviewing puck-over-the-glass and minor high-sticking calls. However, they seem to be reaching the conclusion that more study is needed before making another rule change.
If the NHL expands use of video review, it would mean more stoppages in the game. It will be difficult to maintain momentum.
"We could have 750 high sticks this year, and we certainly don't want to be checking every one," NHL director of officiating Stephen Walkom told NHL.com. "That's a lot bigger issue."
NHL officials are cognisant of fan unrest with missed calls. Another possibility is for league officials to notify the referees during a game when a puck-over-the-glass or minor high-sticking call is missed.
They have been looking for a watch-style receiver that would buzz when the NHL replay room sees an incorrect call quickly on replay. Then, a coach doesn’t need to risk a minor penalty on a challenge.
But what everyone has learned over the last decade is that every time you change a rule you end up with unintended consequences. That’s why GMs are leaning toward further study.
Another issue being discussed are the fights that occur because teammates are defending the player who was hit. There have been 271 fights this season, and 36.9% (100) have included that scenario. Of the 100 instances of teammates defending their players, 89% were on clean hits.
Why should a player be drawn into a fight for delivering a legal body check? Should players who start fights after a legal hit be further punished? Clearly, it discourages hitting.
But general managers don’t have an appetite for adding a specific penalty to address this. The consensus, at least for now, is that the referees can use the instigator penalty, already on the books, to police the situation.

🖐 Johnny Gaudreau's 5 points power Blue Jackets to 6-5 win over the Sharks. Johnny Hockey scored to tie the game at 1-1 midway through the 1st period, earned his playmaker patch (3 assists) in the 2nd, and scored with 43 seconds remaining in overtime to record his third 5-point game of his NHL career. Patrik Laine had his goal streak end at four games but extended his point streak to six thanks to primary assists on both of Gaudreau's goals. The Blue Jackets win officially eliminates the San Jose Sharks from playoff contention.

📈 Jonathan Quick wins 4th in a row as Golden Knights drop the Flyers 5-3. The 37-year-old netminder made 27 saves and improved his record with the Golden Knights to a perfect 4-0. The win gives Quick 374 on his career, tying him with John Vanbiesbrouck for 2nd on the all-time wins list among American goalies. Ivan Barbashev scored twice, Jonathan Marchessault added a goal and 2 assists, and Teddy Blueger scored his first as a Golden Knight. And we're happy to report Pavel Dorofeyev scored the 2nd goal of his NHL career last night and this time not off his face but rather a beauty wraparound.
