Ovi Scores Pair to Take Away An NHL Record From The Great One

Alex Ovechkin’s side hustle these days is breaking NHL scoring records. It seems as if every time Ovechkin lights the lamp another another mark falls.

Ovechkin erased a Wayne Gretzky standard Tuesday when he scored twice in the Washington Capitals’ 5-1 triumph against the Vancouver Canucks. That establishes a new record of 403 NHL road goals.

“I think he has 13 goals this year and I want to say eight or nine have been a new record,” Washington center Dylan Strome said.

Ovechkin’s first tally also tied Jaromir Jagr’s league record of 135 first goals of the game.

The victory at Rogers Arena was important to the Capitals because it ended a six-game road losing streak. The Capitals (10-11-3) are still three points out of a playoff spot.

In case you were wondering, Ovechkin now boasts 160 multiple-goal games. But he still has work to catch Gretzky’s 189. There is no one between them.

More importantly, the two goals give him 793 in his career. The 37-year-old Ovechkin now trails Gretzky by 101 goals. Third-place Ovechkin needs nine goals to pass Gordie Howe to move into second on the all-time list.

Ovechkin is on pace for 44 goals this season. If he can stay on that pace, he will break Gretzky’s record in 2024-25.

“It’s always nice when you beat the Great One,” Ovechkin told Vancouver reporters about claiming the NHL road goal record. “It doesn’t matter what kind of milestone it is. It’s history.”
