Good morning and happy Monday, March 6th.
Last Friday's poll was split 60/40 with the majority of participants incorrectly predicting Brock Boeser would be moved by the deadline... we feel for Canucks fan who have to continue to hear about this saga until sometime this summer.
With the NHL trade deadline finally behind us, our team would love to hear what Eastern and Western Conference teams you think are best prepared for a deep playoff run. Please reply to this email and let us know. 👊
What’s Wrong With the Tampa Bay Lightning?
The Tampa Bay Lightning, the team that owns two Stanley Cups and three consecutive trips to the Final, is a struggling hockey team today.
They lost 6-0 to the Carolina Hurricanes Sunday for their fifth consecutive loss. The Lightning had no shots on goal in the second period. They gave up a season-high five power play goals.
The Lightning have given up 27 goals during the losing streak. This is the franchise’s longest losing streak in nine years.
“Confidence is a funny thing, right?,” Cooper said. “You’d like to just bottle it up, put it in an envelope and hand it to everybody and say, ‘Check your mail.’ But guys, they’ve got routines and they’re used to making plays. And when it’s off a bit, guys are questioning themselves.”
To make the situation more stressful, Tampa Bay’s No. 1 defenseman Victor Hedman left the game in the second period with an injury. He will be evaluated today in Tampa.
The day before, the Lightning lost 5-3 to the Buffalo Sabres and the line of Steven Stamkos, Brayden Point and Nikita Kucherov was benched for the entire third period.
"As coaches you've got to put your team in the best position to win, and 99.9 percent of the time those guys give us the best chance to win when they're on the ice," Cooper said after that loss. "Just felt in the third period they weren't giving us the best chance to win. … We have a set of standards here that everybody adheres to, and it's not pick and choose. It's everybody."
This didn’t happen overnight. Tampa Bay has given up an uncharacteristic 3.08 goals per game this season. That ranks 15th in the NHL. That’s not how they have found success in recent years.
Since February 15, they’ve lost eight of 10 games. The Lightning have given up four or more goals in seven of those games.
CAN'T MISS
👑 Jonathan Quick makes 25 saves to secure 4-3 win over the Canadiens in Golden Knights debut. The 2012 Conn Smythe winner was perfect through his first two periods before surrendering 3 goals early in the third. But the veteran netminder shut the door down the stretch, including a sprawling save to stop a Jonathan Drouin one-timer with 19 seconds left, to preserve the 4-3 win. Recently acquired Ivan Barbashev scored his first and second goal as a Golden Knight as Vegas won its third straight and carries a 9-1-2 record since the All-Star break.
"It's a fun building to play in," Quick said. "These fans are great, we've known that since day one. Definitely a warm reception, and I enjoyed that."
🚨 Timo Meier scores in debut as the New Jersey Devils beat the Arizona Coyotes 5-4 in overtime. The 26-year-old forward waited all of 9 minutes into his Devils debut to score his 32nd of the season, thanks to a juicy Connor Ingram rebound. Playing in his first game since February 18th due to an upper-body injury, Meier finished with 3 shots, 3 hits, 1 block, and -1 in 15:57 of ice time. The Coyotes made their best effort to ruin Meier's debut, scoring twice in the third period to force overtime. But fellow Swiss native and Devils teammate Nico Hischier scored just 23 seconds into overtime to capture the 5-4 win.
